Lime Tree Brown Teacle Bread
We have been making this brown treacle bread at the Lime Tree for many years now.
The recipe is easy and quick – why not make it at home.
Ingredients
- 225grams /8ozs Plain Flour
- 225grams /8ozs Extra Course Wholemeal Flour
- 50grams /2ozs Jumbo Porridge Oats
- 50grams /2ozs Castor Sugar
- 1 Tsp Salt
- 3 Tsp Baking Powder
- 1 ½ Tsp Bread Soda
- 100mls Black Treacle
- 1 Fresh Egg
- 600mls Full Fat Milk
- 2 Handfuls Walnuts
Method
- Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/350°F
- Grease and line with parchment a 2lb Loaf tin
- In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together
- Whisk the Milk and Eggs together, and add the treacle, mixing well
- Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet
- Mix by hand, being careful not to over mix, as this will cause your bread to be tough. The mixture should be wet, and resemble a porridge like substance
- Bake for 50 minutes – the cooked bread should sound hollow when tapped on the side
- Turn onto a wire rack to cool Serve with butter and the jam of your choice
