Lime Tree Brown Teacle Bread

We have been making this brown treacle bread at the Lime Tree for many years now.
The recipe is easy and quick – why not make it at home.

Ingredients
  • 225grams /8ozs Plain Flour
  • 225grams /8ozs Extra Course Wholemeal Flour
  • 50grams /2ozs Jumbo Porridge Oats
  • 50grams /2ozs Castor Sugar
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 3 Tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 ½ Tsp Bread Soda
  • 100mls Black Treacle
  • 1 Fresh Egg
  • 600mls Full Fat Milk
  • 2 Handfuls Walnuts
Method
  • Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/350°F
  • Grease and line with parchment a 2lb Loaf tin
  • In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together
  • Whisk the Milk and Eggs together, and add the treacle, mixing well
  • Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet
  • Mix by hand, being careful not to over mix, as this will cause your bread to be tough. The mixture should be wet, and resemble a porridge like substance
  • Bake for 50 minutes – the cooked bread should sound hollow when tapped on the side
  • Turn onto a wire rack to cool Serve with butter and the jam of your choice
